In 2008 the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety funded a project to obtain updated information on current policies and practices affecting older and medically-at-risk drivers and to identify innovative state driver licensing programs that might be replicated elsewhere. Although promising, almost none of the previously identified noteworthy DMV initiatives have been formally evaluated.
The current project will identify a subset of the most promising initiatives culled by the 2008 project; determining which are most in need of, and amenable to, evaluation, and which might be recommended without further evaluation. The project will also plan and conduct an evaluation of one or two of the initiatives and work with other organizations to encourage adoption of high priority initiatives by other states. Through state contacts, specific guidance for implementing the selected programs will be developed to maximize the chances for success. Ultimately this projects core goal is to increase senior safety and mobility by improving state driver licensing practices.
